Showcase of Training of NLTs

MaTE NLT

In the context of growing diversity in European classrooms, initial and continuing teacher training can ensure that teaching staff have the skills to teach children who don’t speak the language of schooling and may be multilingual (European Commission 2016, Language teaching and learning in multilingual classrooms).

Change in the classrooms is making it evermore necessary to equip present and future Native Language Teachers to meet the challenges of the obtaining new dynamics.

In this context this project shall create a panorama of:

  • the obtaining training offer for native language teachers (NLTs) in Higher Education Institutions and other professional training providers especially those teaching the native language of the receiving country as a second language for immigrant students and/or in multilingual classrooms and
  • of how Higher Education Institutions organise, monitor, mentor and assess teaching practice of NLTs.

The partners are working with their European networks to create a panorama of the qualifications required and the criteria used for the admission of future teachers of native languages before they start their training.

  • If your organisation wishes to share this information with us please fill in this short questionnaire
  • The results will be shared on this page later on when we will have gathered a relevant number of feedbacks.

They are also collecting information about the practical aspects and methodology of mentoring and validation of teaching practice of future NLTs.

  • If your organisation wishes to share information with us please fill in this short questionnaire.

In the meantime the partners are also working in the background on the generation of an EU wide panorama of the training offer by different Faculties of Education and providers of teacher education. This will help them map areas of potential innovation and avenues for change that takes into account the different drivers of change in the native language classroom.
